| Pennina - sad news |
[08 Nov 2009|01:37am] |
For those of you who don't visit Chit-Chat very often these days, some sad news - BookCrosser Pennina has died, after seeming to be on the mend from a recent illness. The BookCrossing thread is here: http://www.bookcrossing.com/forum/5/6537344/7 Her presence in the BookCrossing forums will be missed. I met her at the Unconvention in Brighton, and wish now I'd had more time to talk to her.

I did some fairly significant tweaking to my new DreamWidth journal today. The reason was that I'd managed to import my LJ entries twice, with two different tools... one third-party (LJ-Sec) and one on the Dreamwidth-site (the import tool, which is excellent because it takes all your comments and user pics along). So I had lots of duplicates, except that in each pair, one had the comments and one had none. Of course, that was the moment I found out that I could not get LJ-sec to log in to my DW account anymore. And also that it was never supposed to work with DW in the first place. But I did get it to work. It wasn't all that hard: I had to create some directories in my LJ-sec installation and place a copy of my LJ journal file in there, so that LJ-sec found the path it was looking for (and the lack of that path was what kept crashing it at first).
So then I could delete my entire DW journal, which contained over 600 entries, almost half of which were duplicates. It took rather long, but it still worked. And then I repeated the import from LJ. So now, all my LJ entries are also in my DW blog, with all comments intact. Sweet.
The only thing that went wrong was that I lost my last entry. Probably because it was posted from DW to begin with. A small price to pay.
Sorry for the nerdspeak. I'm just feeling rather smug about this and needed to celebrate. If anyone wants to try Dreamwidth too, let me know and I'll point you to where I found an invite code.

Right now, I am past the 8,500 word mark. Honestly, I was hemming and hawing about doing it this year until a friend of mine asked me if I planed to publish any other writing beyond the novel that I already self-publish (my first Nano entry of 2005, actually). In the course of my answering him, I mention that I might not participate in Nano this year. He was pretty shocked. It was enough the one person cared to make me realize that I have done this and won for four years despite a rigorous schedule (and cranky significant others at times). I can hopefully do it again, and get a story that I could not stop thinking about writing out of my head once and for all. I thought that one thing, on top of work and my personal life would hinder me this year. This past September, I started working on my own webcomic. Launching it officially on October 5th of this year, I wanted to make this project my main artistic focus, since there are comic and anime conventions that I want to attend to advertise, including Castle Point Anime Convention and a new Comic Book Convention to start up in my home State of Connecticut in May of next year. Nevertheless, the concern of a friend and the muse that often likes to tell me to eat peanut butter cups, piss off, what have you, got me into this year's competition. This is not to say that I will forget my webcomic. Instead, I will devote part of this month to shooting NanoWrimo inspire strips to keep myself, and other participants sane for the duration of the competition. The first of which is my latest strip, which can be found here: http://projectpoppet.com

Hey guys! Back again for another year! I haven't felt particularly inspired yet this year... but i know it will come. I think its because i'm writing about something more personal this year than previous years.

I'm going to make myself hit at least 1k tonight though! Hope everyone else is having a good start!

Hello, hope everyone is doing ok so far. It's only day one after all! Even if you aren't, there's still plenty of time to catch up.
I just wanted to ask if anyone else is having trouble posting the various wordcount widgets to their Livejournal. I'm hoping I'm just doing something wrong, but they just don't seem to be working out for me this year. Last year I had no problems. A possible case of busy NaNoWriMo servers?
EDIT: Turns out the widgets aren't switched on yet. There are a few threads on the forum covering it.

| Happy Halloween! |
[31 Oct 2009|08:24pm] |
alanna here -
I just wanted to make a quick post to wish you all a wonderful and safe Halloween. We are, in my current timezone (PST), just a few short hours away from the start of a great adventure. Some of us have been there, done that; others are just venturing out with their gear. But no matter what, every November is an exciting trip.
I wish I could be with you all tonight in the chatroom, but I will not be able to join you for the great moment(s) when the clock changes to midnight and we all take off. In fact, I will not be able to start writing for another few days myself. But I wish you all the best start tonight!
Throughout the month, Tasha, Nicole and I will be hanging out in the chatroom to offer encouragement, run word wars, praise you and cry with you. So will a lot of other people. That's what we're here for.
To everyone:
Good night, and Good Luck!

| Liquid Story Binder? |
[31 Oct 2009|01:54pm] |
I've seen it mentioned on the nano boards as well as in other communities ( nanowrimo). Anyone here use it? Is it worth the money? Apparently it's on sale during November only but there's also a thirty day trial. I'm impulsive and so I'm thinking about snatching it up and just buying it but what's the point if I might not ever use it? Anything on previous experience with it would be awesome, thanks.
PS If you use something else and LOVE it, let me know, please?

| this week's highlights |
[28 Oct 2009|09:56pm] |
- New favourite film quote: "I shall get a cat and a parrot and live alone in single blessedness," Bette Davis as Charlotte Vale to her mother in Now, Voyager after being asked: "And what do you intend to do with your life" after ending her engagement.
- Favourite quote in my current read - Paradise by A. L. Kennedy, p 84: "Being me is a job - is labour so time-consuming and expensive that I have to have a second job just to support it."
- I managed to get every single thing on today's to do list done and met people for lunch, tea and dinner. Yes I have a to do list for every single day now. I'm very proud of myself. I doubt I'll be able to keep that up, though.
- I also finally have a date when I will get the keys for my new apartment in Linz. This is a huge relief and means I can buy a bed & couch now and have them delivered there before I move the other furniture.
In order to pick one I went to Ikea this week. And I did not, I repeat, did not buy any candles or paper napkins. For the first time ever. Whenever I go there I default to "cheapest acceptable option". But after working for six years, I feel maybe it's time for a grown up apartment. You know, with enough chairs and crockery to have a few guests over. But when I look at the grown up versions of couches or settees or whatever you want to call them, I'm always wondering if that is the first step on my way to becoming the kind of person who has a built in closet, a wall unit (preferably in dark brown) and three-piece suite and all those things I associate with petty bourgeois. I wonder if there is any middle ground between these two and if I manage to find it.
